Question: Has the future been delayed?

Answer #1:

Yeah, I agree.
I think the only reason why advancements were made in 60's was because of the space race between the Russians and the Americans. Since then, there doesn't seem to be such a big drive for space missions.

Answer #2:

I agree, The technology for 2001 A Space Odyssey was available in 1970 (well except for HAL). We are still stumbling.

And our current president is not helping.

Answer #3:

Welcome to the club.

If you really want to be frustrated, find science or technology books or mags from the 1950's and 1960's and see what they had forecasted for the world to be like in the year 2000.

On the other hand, who's to blame? Everyone wants *other* people to do the hard work and pay for it. Just take a stroll through Y!A and see how many people can't even spell properly ("you are too" being rendered as "u r 2" and "does" as "dose" and so on). You would trust your life in a rocket designed by people who can even read and write properly, with rather scary views on science?

Answer #4:

Can't argue with your scenario of what could have been. Instead of exploring the Solar System, we're just going around in circles up in the ISS.
