Question: Climate change and global warming questions – part 1?
( Back )
Answer #1:
1) What proportion of the Earth's atmosphere is carbon dioxide?B … 0.04%
2) Which of these is considered to be the largest contributor to manmade global warming?
E … Agriculture and farming (of the options listed)
3) What does IPCC stand for?
C … Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
4) What happens when you burn methane?
C … You get water and carbon dioxide
5) If you released equal amounts of these greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which one is likely to cause the most warming?
C … Nitrous oxide
6) By what amount does natural global warming raise Earth’s average temperature?
D … 33°C (natural greenhouse effect)
7) Only one of the following periods of low solar activity is in the correct chronological order, which one is it?
A … Wolf Minimum, Sporer Minimum, Maunder Minimum
8) Taking into account emissions of all greenhouse gases, approximately how much does the average person on Earth contribute to the atmosphere each year?
B … 5 tonnes
9) If two people were discussing the climate and the effect of the NAO, what would they most likely be talking about?
E … Atmospheric changes over the ocean
10) Assuming nothing gets in the way, when is the peak of the next ice age due?
B … In about 100,000 years
Answer #2:
1) What proportion of the Earth's atmosphere is carbon dioxide?B … 0.04% --- 380/1,000,000 is actually 0.038
2) Which of these is considered to be the largest contributor to manmade global warming?
C … Paper and timber processing
Based on deforestation
3) What does IPCC stand for?
C … Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
If you had included "Incompetent Purveyors of Climate Crap" I would have gone with that.
4) What happens when you burn methane?
C … You get water and carbon dioxide
Both of these are nutritional requirements for plant growth!
5) If you released equal amounts of these greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which one is likely to cause the most warming?
B … Methane
So why bother putting an ETS into place on CO2???
H2O is the largest Greenhouse gas simply because there is so much of it.
6) By what amount does natural global warming raise Earth’s average temperature?
D … 33°C
7) Only one of the following periods of low solar activity is in the correct chronological order, which one is it?
I refuse to answer on the grounds that the question is too boring!
8) Taking into account emissions of all greenhouse gases, approximately how much does the average person on Earth contribute to the atmosphere each year?
D … 25 tonnes
The corrrect answer is 22, but I'll go with the closest. The measure is a completely wasted exercise unless you point out that the higher the Carbon footprint the happier and healthier the person is. The lower the footprint, the more crappy the country is. They should call it the civilisation footprint.
9) If two people were discussing the climate and the effect of the NAO, what would they most likely be talking about?
E … Atmospheric changes over the ocean
North Atlantic Oscillation...
10) Assuming nothing gets in the way, when is the peak of the next ice age due?
A … In about 10,000 years But nobody really knows.
Not if Al Gore is correct - by then the Earth's surface will be hotter than the Sun due to "Runaway Global Warming" aided by the "Tipping Point" Demons!
Answer #3:
I had to guess at a couple.1) What proportion of the Earth's atmosphere is carbon dioxide?
B … 0.04%
2) Which of these is considered to be the largest contributor to manmade global warming?
E … Agriculture and farming
3) What does IPCC stand for?
C … Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
4) What happens when you burn methane?
C … You get water and carbon dioxide
5) If you released equal amounts of these greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which one is likely to cause the most warming?
C … Nitrous oxide
6) By what amount does natural global warming raise Earth’s average temperature?
D … 33°C
7) Only one of the following periods of low solar activity is in the correct chronological order, which one is it?

7) C
8) A
9) C
10)B
Answer #5:
1) What proportion of the Earth's atmosphere is carbon dioxide?B … 0.04%
2) Which of these is considered to be the largest contributor to manmade global warming?
E … Interestingly it is also the one that has the largest fudge factor. You can claim CO2 from all sorts of things from land to plants to decomposition to far equipment to cows, etc. It also is the easies to exaggerate.
3) What does IPCC stand for?
C
4) What happens when you burn methane?
C H20 +CO2 +heat (not important source of heat)
5) If you released equal amounts of these greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which one is likely to cause the most warming?
CNitrous oxide. I would word the question differently. I would ask which one has the greatest greenhouse effect or greenhouse potential. It may in fact reduce a cooling trend. Also you have to keep in mind that some GHG decompose at different rates so may cause heating over a longer time. Methane is rather short lived. CO2 has a disputed half life. I don't know what N2O is
6) By what amount does natural global warming raise Earth’s average temperature?
D
7) Only one of the following periods of low solar activity is in the correct chronological order, which one is it?
AWolf Minimum, Sporer Minimum, Maunder Minimum,
might as well as Dalton while we're at it.
8) Taking into account emissions of all greenhouse gases, approximately how much does the average person on Earth contribute to the atmosphere each year?
B I had to look this one up 5 tonnes. I had it calculated out but forgot it. I am skeptical of the number because I haven't verified it in any way.
9) If two people were discussing the climate and the effect of the NAO, what would they most likely be talking about?
E Probably more important to you Brits
10) Assuming nothing gets in the way, when is the peak of the next ice age due?
B …Peak meaning coldest period. but it will be followed by a rapid warm period if the trend holds. ?That is assuming the trend holds as shown on the Milankovitch Cycle from the Volstock cores

Answer #6:
1. .04%2. My guess is A
3. C
4. You get carbon and hydrogen that, when oxidized, forms carbon dioxide and water. So I guess C
5. My guess is Nitrous Oxide - C
6. 33C - D
7. Don't know
8. Haven't looked it up but I would say either B or C
9. The answer is E
10. I've heard various statements concerning ice age times and this is another thing I have not looked at myself. I would guess but I wouldn't want to be wrong :)
Answer #7:
1) What proportion of the Earth's atmosphere is carbon dioxide?B … 0.04% 0.000385 == .0004 == .04%
2) Which of these is considered to be the largest contributor to manmade global warming?
E … Agriculture and farming - just because of the sheer magnitude.
3) What does IPCC stand for?
C … Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
4) What happens when you burn methane?
C … You get water and carbon dioxide -- last i looked. :)
5) If you released equal amounts of these greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which one is likely to cause the most warming?
B … Methane ??????????
C … Nitrous oxide <-- upon examination.

6) By what amount does natural global warming raise Earth’s average temperature?
avg moon temp = -23°C earth = 15°C warming should be 38°C however, there'll be some internal energy keeping the earth a bit warmer.
D … 33°C
7) Only one of the following periods of low solar activity is in the correct chronological order, which one is it?
A … Wolf Minimum, Sporer Minimum, Maunder Minimum -- thanks.

A … In about 10,000 years
Click Here (i wasn't going to answer, but i knew this one. temp plunges, then gradually warms.)
AW MAN, WHEN AM I GONNA LEARN TO READ?
chart reads right to left.
B … In about 100,000 years SIGH
i can't remember what i did yesterday.
but i sure remembered that chart, THAT I READ WRONG !!!!!!!!!
Answer #8:
"10) Assuming nothing gets in the way, when is the peak of the next ice age due?A … In about 10,000 years But nobody really knows.
Not if Al Gore is correct - by then the Earth's surface will be hotter than the Sun due to "Runaway Global Warming" aided by the "Tipping Point" Demons!"
WAAAAAAAAT?
lets look at that again,
...Not if Al Gore is correct - by then the Earth's surface will be hotter than the Sun...
by then the Earth's surface will be hotter than the Sun? what 3000-6000 degrees centigrade? how the hell do you think thats going to happen? apparently the surface of Venus isnt hotter than the sun, and its been doing this global warming thing a lot longer than we have
Answer #9:
Rather than answer the questions (which I believe Dana got all correct), I'm going to offer some comments on All Black:>1) What proportion of the Earth's atmosphere is carbon dioxide?
>B … 0.04% --- 380/1,000,000 is actually 0.038
Actually, we're at about 392ppm at the moment: Click Here .
>2) Which of these is considered to be the largest contributor to manmade global warming?
>C … Paper and timber processing
>Based on deforestation
If you are going to account for deforestation, then the answer has to agriculture, since a the greatest reason for human deforestation is land clearance for agriculture (in addition to all the other emissions from modern agricultural practices).
>3) What does IPCC stand for?
>C … Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change
>If you had included "Incompetent Purveyors of Climate Crap" I would have gone with that.
Evidence? A couple of mistakes in a 4,000 page document crammed with dense statistical and empirical claims is an amazing achievement. Of course it could and should have been improved, but at the time of publication it was by far the the most comprehensive analysis of the state of climate research.
>4) What happens when you burn methane?
>C … You get water and carbon dioxide
>Both of these are nutritional requirements for plant growth!
And water is required for human life, but that's not much consolation if you're drowning. It is the relative concentration that is important. Venus has very high levels of CO2 and even some water, but is a little short on plant life. The point that CO2 is needed for plant growth is a simplistic and misleading meme as there has been considerable research into the effects on plant growth of raising CO2 (and temps) and after the first degree or so of increased temperature, it is pretty much all bad news (up to a degree, there is mixed news with some gains and some losses).
>5) If you released equal amounts of these greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, which one is >likely to cause the most warming?
>B … Methane
>So why bother putting an ETS into place on CO2???
>H2O is the largest Greenhouse gas simply because there is so much of it.
Because CO2 has the largest impact overall, even if other gases have a higher impact per molecule. This is simple mathematics, as you acknowledge with your comment on H2O. H2O is indeed a greenhouse gas, but is highly sensitive to temperature and short-lived, and so acts as a feedback, not a forcing.
>8) Taking into account emissions of all greenhouse gases, approximately how much does the >average person on Earth contribute to the atmosphere each year?
>D … 25 tonnes
>The corrrect answer is 22, but I'll go with the closest. The measure is a completely wasted
>exercise unless you point out that the higher the Carbon footprint the happier and healthier the
>person is. The lower the footprint, the more crappy the country is. They should call it the
>civilisation footprint.
You're assuming that the whole world is as wasteful as your own country perhaps? The average is much closer to 5. You'll also find that the countries with the highest standards of living, longest lifespans, and who regularly top various developmental indexes are not at the top of list of emitters. They are not at the bottom either. But your ignorance is showing..
>10) Assuming nothing gets in the way, when is the peak of the next ice age due?

Others have pointed out the enormous mistake here.
